Tuesday Squawk

Well, it sure looks like March is going out like a lion. Hopefully, we will get the April Showers to bring on the May flowers.

Tomorrow is April Fool's Day. Remember as a kid how you would think up things to play on the others on this day? Jim was always one to try and pull something on me early in the morning before my cup of coffee when the only thing I wanted was peace and quiet until I got that cup of coffee down. Sometimes he would get me good with his practical jokes.

April Calender:

Saturday, April 4 Bullhead and Fish Fry serving from 4pm to 7pm. Bullheads, Pollack, Oven Roast Potatoes, Italian Salad, Mostacolli Salad, Tuna Salad, Coleslaw, Buns/Butter, Bars, Coffee/Lemonade. All you can eat for $8 for adults.

Tuesday, April 7 - Economic Development Meeting - 5:30 at the Community Center. A spokesman from the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce will be there to talk about the benefits of joining the Chamber. We always welcome more members.

Monday, April 13 is Squaw Lake City Council at 7pm at Community Center.

Tuesday, April 14 is Nurse at Community Center at 9am.

If you have items for the Consigment Auction please get ahold of Diane - 659-2606 or Julie - 659-4239 and let them know what you have. If more items do not come in this week we probably won't have an auction.

Guess I don't have too much to say tonight. I know that is hard to believe but I'm just not talkative tonight. Hope this snow isn't bothering you to much. At least it is April and should melt soon instead of getting this in October. I'm glad someone told me that tonight. I'm trying to look on the bright side of this snow.

Take care,
Julie

Monday's Squawk

Well, it was hard to get up this morning. But I made it.

The water is over one of my roads on the bus route in 3 different places. Most of it is kind of sitting water but in one spot it is really flowing across the road. I'm just glad it isn't my road. My dirt road is in really good shape but who knows what will happen if we get the snow they are predicting. I'm just so happy the road stays in such good shape. When we moved here 33 years ago every spring you walked out to the highway. We would get excited when it got good enough to be able to get in and out with the tractor with a trailer behind. My kids would say, "Ya Ma and you walked uphill both ways to school when you were young." No, I really didn't there were school buses then also.

It was a great day for wildlife. On the Bigfork River in Wirt there were a pair of Swans, half dozen or so Canada geese. Then on one of the fields I drive by were 3 deer laying out in the field. I saw a grouse all puffed up standing in the middle of the road and finally he decided the bus was bigger and moved off to the side. Close to Dora Lake I saw a deer that must of been hit by a car as it was limping off the road.

When I got to work at Mertes Garage this morning they had been hard at work while I was gone with having the floors all done. My they look nice and Art was busy painting walls. Spring must be in the air when people are starting to paint etc.

We are getting some donations in for the Take a Kid Fishing day. We are asking for donations of money or rod/reel combo's. We are working toward a goal of giving each child that comes to the day to take home a rod/reel combo. Also, we are looking for more guides for the day. If you are interested in helping on this project give Jeanne Frey 659-4587 or myself 659-4239 a call. We appreciate all your help. This is sponsored by the Squaw Lake Fire Dept.

Hopefully, the snow will be over by Saturday so no one has the excuse that the snow kept them away for the Bullhead and Fish Fry. This fund raiser proceeds goes to the Community Center Fund. We hope to see all of you there. Any questions give Julie a call at 659-4239. Thanks.

Here's a little humor for all of you. I got this in an email so don't know the author or where it came from but I hope you enjoy it.

A little 10-year-old girl was walking home, alone, from school one day, when a big man on a black motorcycle pulls up beside her. After following along for a while, turns to her and asks,

"Hey there little girl, do you want to go for a ride?"

"NO!" says the little girl as she keeps on walking.

The motorcyclist again pulls up beside her and asks,

"Hey little girl, I will give you $10 if you hop on the back."

"NO!" says the little girl as she hurries down the street.

The motorcyclist pulls up beside the little girl again and says,
"Okay kid, my last offer! I'll give you 20 bucks "and" a big bag of candy
if you will just hop on the back of my bike and we will go for a ride.."

Finally, the little girl stops and turns towards him and Screams Out....
"LOOK DAD" "You're the one who bought the Honda instead of the Harley"!
"YOU RIDE IT!"

Happy Birthday, Judy Bertram.

Have a great day tomorrow.

Bookmobile

Here I was chatting away with you earlier and I forgot one important announcement. The Bookmobile is back in service and will be in Squaw Lake on Friday, April 3rd, from 5 -6:30pm at Eagleview.

Take care,
Julie

Sunday's Squawk

Going on vacation is nice but it sure is wonderful to be back at my own home. I'm beginning to understand why it is so hard for older people to have to leave their homes when they are no longer able to do all the stuff they need to do. I had a wonderful time with the kids and grandkids but Gram does like to have her own quiet time.

I was disappointed when I got this side of Grand Rapids and I was seeing more snow in the woods and that the ice wasn't even beginning to let go around the edges. Down by the cities the ice is out a good 40 or 50 feet from the shore and the rest is black. Some of the smaller potholes the ice was gone. I saw a flock of about 30 Swans just north of Elk River. That was a beautiful site. I see we have some geese back here also. I've asked but so far no one has reported seeing a robin. I was really hoping that by the time I got back the snow would be gone in the yard and it would be drying up. Now I see from the Duluth Weather Service that we will be in a "Winter Storm Warning", from 7am Tuesday to 7am Wednesday with possible snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches with snow falling at a rate of an inch or more an hour. Gee and I thought Spring was going to come. I really hope they are wrong about this snow or maybe it will change course and go south of us. They are brown, so they could use some.

Again, today driving home I saw some grouse on the road. Maybe this will be the year for the grouse hunters to have a great season.

I was going to go for a walk this afternoon when I got home but I didn't make it too far down the road and I decided my blood must have thinned out quite a bit while I was gone so I came back to the house and threw on another block of wood in the furnace. I knew I should of put those flannel lined jeans on again. BUT it felt so nice to wear the light clothing while I was gone.

I hope all that read this have been well and healthy while I was gone. I've had some nice emails from afar about the blog and how they appreciate being able to keep in contact with what is going on up in Squaw Lake. Pretty soon our snowbirds will be coming home for the summer. It will be nice to see all of you again. I hope if any of you have any news that you would like to share that you would email me. All of us up here wonder how everyone that is here in the summer are doing in the winter.

I saw a couple of deer in the Avenue of Pines today that looked to be in really nice shape. I saw quite a few tracks on the driveway also. It's nice to see them in such good shape.

I just talked to Judy and Dick Bertram tonight and as we were talking they had 8 cow elk come into their yard. They had some snow and rain out there but not as much as was predicted. Both are doing real well and talking about coming up this summer.

Well, I had better sign off and head for bed because I am sure when that alarm goes off at 5am tomorrow this old body will still be snoozing. I'm sure it will be hard to get up for a few days after having all of last week sleeping in.

Have a great day tomorrow,
Julie

Minnesota Reading Corps Recruiting for '09-'10

The Minnesota Reading Corps is working to fill 400 positions statewide for next school year and Kootasca is currently recruiting for local openings.
Position descriptions and the application are available online now. Positions start in August.

The North Central Region is headquartered in Grand Rapids and currently serves nine Kindergarten-Grade 3 sites, and 10 preschool sites. Click here for a list.

Reading Corps members are all Americorps Volunteers who receive a stipend, education benefits, and if full-time qualify for medical coverage.

I'm Back!!

Good Morning Everyone,

Well, hopefully the blog will get back to normal. Sitting a my daughter's and watching the geese, ducks and swans coming into a corn field across the road from her house.

It sure is good to be back in Minnesota, wish we could send lots of the water from the valley to Florida. It was very dry by Orlando. I felt sorry for the cows in the field not much to eat and very dry. It did rain one day and the next the lawn where we stayed started to green up. The grass kinda looked like our good ole quack grass we have up north. At least that is what is in my lawn. I love it, I only have to mow for a while and then I cut it real short and if it doesn't rain it turns brown and doesn't grow. Then if we get a few sprinkles it turns green. Of course my son-in-law being from the cities wants to fertilize my lawn, I told him he was dead meat if he did. He can fertilize his side of the lawn but then I quit mowing for him. I only believe in mowing once a week. I have to admit his lawn at his house is much nicer than mine BUT I still don't want to mow.

Saturday, April 4 is the Bullhead and Fish Fry at the Community Center, I'd put the time but drawing a brain blank right now. I know I have posted it many times. Hope to see all of you there. It will be a good time.

It will be nice to be in my own home again. I know I'm getting old when I enjoy my family so much but I need that quiet time to myself each day. I have to admit that having the warmth and sunshine while I was gone sure perked up my attitude.

Well, is the snow all gone up there? I hope so, then it will start to dry and then I can start the process of cleaning up everything my dog has drug around the yard all winter. Hopefully, one of these days she will grow out of the puppy stage. You would think at 3 years old she would be. They will be glad to see me when I get home but I know they miss all the treats that Rod feeds them when I'm gone. Anything that I am eating after Rod has taken care of them they think should be their treat also.

I'm surprised that the wind isn't blowing this morning. There was a lot of wind in Florida also. One day we went to a beach close to Clearwater and walked on the beach. We saw 5 porpoise out in the Gulf. Stephanie got some nice pictures of them. Of course I did my usual and left
my camera was in the motel room. Sometimes I wonder why I own a camera because I usually have forgotten it at home.

Have a great day will post more after I get home.

A little Squawk

Hi All,

Well, the sun has left us today so we are going to drive and see if we can find some. I understand you are getting quite a bit of rain up there. I'm having a great time relaxing and reading. I am so glad that I live up north. The traffic is horrible as far as I'm concerned but Stephanie seems like it isn't a problem. This is fun but I am looking forward to getting back home. Guess you can take the gal out of Max but you can't take Max out of the gal. Hopefully, the big blizzard they are talking about for you guys won't happen. But so far anytime I've ever went any place in the winter I've come back to Minneapolis and there has been fresh snow on the ground. For the last 2 days everytime I've looked on the weather channel for up there it has showed a storm moving in and they are talking about how bad we have it. Well gotta go.
Takea care,
Julie

Small squawk

Hi Everyone,

Well, I think the R&R is helping. I couldn't believe that I slept in til 8 this morning. The sun is shining and it's suppose to be 80 above today. The wind has been blowing alot. Yesterday we spent the day at a waterpark. Fun for all.

Don't forget the Sweetheart Dance tonite at the Community Center. Starts at 7 and music is by The Pretenders and Friends. Last year's dance was a huge success. Hope you all go and be sure and tell me about it when I get home.

Hope you're not getting too much rain or snow up there. Looks like when I get back there will be some nasty weather. Of course when I left was great weather so forgot my winter coat in Squaw Lake.

Will write more later. Have a great weekend.

Spring has popped!!!

As some of you may or may not know I have 3 doe goats and 1 buck (affectionately known as Stinkface). My lead doe has been showing all the signs of impending motherhood for a week now. She has been looking at me for days wondering why I'm checking her every 2 hours. Today I decided: Enough! I'm going to McGregor for the day. We got back at about 7 o'clock to fresh snow on the ground and a mess from today's weather. I opened the barn door and a brand new kid buck fell out and landed on my foot - his sister was already standing up and away from the door. So today Spring (her name is actually Sable) popped and surprised me. The new babies are Willow and Chev. One down and 2 to go. Have a great evening all.

A little bit of stuff

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Thanks for the comments on the blog. I hope that everyone will start to think of it as part of their own blog and add interesting notes on it. I have lots of ideas for it but haven't had time to get much accomplished. My what lovely weather we are having. Wish I had been taking the R&R I needed last week when we had such crummy weather but I'm doing it this week. I am looking forward to doing it.

The recipe on the blog tonite sounds very yummy. I will have to try it out on my grandkids the next time they are up.

The SLFD completed another great Perch Jerkers Contest. It was a good fund raiser for the dept. Next is the Sweetheart Dance with music by The Pretenders and Friends. This is some great listening and dancing music they provide. Good for both the young and not so young. It will be a fun time for all.

April 4th, the dept will be sponsoring the Bullhead & Fish Fry, serving from 4:30 to 7P. I've had alot of people ask me if bullheads aren't fish. We all know they are BUT(as hard as it is to believe) some people don't count them as a fish and if you just put Bullhead Fry they wouldn't show up. So we serve not only Bullheads but this year we will be serving Pollack also. All proceeds of this event goes to the Community Center Fund. Of course we will be serving oven roasted potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, assorted salads (I still haven't made up my mind),bars, buns, coffee and lemonade. All you can eat for $8.00/adult, $4.00 children 5-12years, under 5 free. Hope to see you there.

The SLFD Auxiliary has been busy helping with all these projects and more in the making. The Department really appreciates these people taking time to help out. Thank you so much. Take a Kid Fishing Day is one of our next big projects. As we are anticipating having 100 kids for this event this year we are requesting donations from charitable gambling, churches, businesses, and individuals. We are hoping to raise $3000 for this event. Our goal is to have 100 rod/reel combos for the kids to fish with that day (we have 40 right now) and another 100 rod/reel combos for each to have one to take home. The Department wants to keep rod/reel combos on hand so that any child that shows up in the next few years has a fishing rod to use. We also have life vests but will need to purchase a few more. If you would like to help with a cash donation you can send it to Squaw Lake Fire Department, P.O. Box 382, Squaw Lake, MN 56681. Make a notation it is for Take a Kid Fishing Day. Otherwise, buy a rod/reel combo and drop it off at Mertes Garage or give me a call at 659-4239. Please include your name so that we will be able to thank you.We can also use fishing tackle. I was truly amazed last year at the number of youth that had never been fishing. I guess living here all my life I thought everyone knew how to fish. I was worried last year that some of the older students would think it was boring but after talking to one 14 year old girl who said that she had never been fishing and she had an awesome time I guess the department is doing the right thing. Maybe if we can teach them to fish they will find other areas of interest. This is a great thing the Department started I think over 10 years ago. Thank you Mike Hoeschen and all the others for all your help to get this off the ground. We also need more guides and boats. Have a boat and some time we would love to see you there. I feel you'd be surprised at how much fun YOU would have. Let me know jhemphil@paulbunyan.net or 659-4239.

Back to my wildlife report. The Swans were seen in the river in Squaw Lake today. They are such a beautiful bird. I almost took out a grouse this morning on the am route. It was so close to the bus I could see it's eye very clearly. Scared the dickens out of me. It has been quite a few years since I have seen this many grouse on my bus routes. Haven't seen as many in the Squaw Lake area as in the Dora Lake, Wirt and Gratten areas. I think we still have a little more snow in the woods down here maybe that is the reason for not seeing them. Most of our gravel roads are getting bare so they should start showing up also. I almost got too up close and personal with a deer tonight on my way home with my car. I really expected to hit it but managed to get stopped in time. I should know to watch out for deer by Norma Forss's house but was thinking about getting home. That would have ruined my R&R plans.

If you have a birthday wish or anniversary wish for anyone just drop me an email: jhemphil@paulbunyan.net and I will post it for you. Any news in your area you'd like to share drop me a line. I would love to see things coming in from all our neighbors so we know what is going on. This might prove better than party lines. (Wow, I just showed my age there.)

Before going to the annual Township meeting tonight I stopped at the Crow Bar and Linda served up some very delicious Corned Beef and Cabbage. Thank you. Everyone in Max township must think we are doing a fairly good job because there was only the board and one other person at this meeting. Folks, this is one meeting where you can speak up on any issue that is of concern to you. We are one week late this year because of having to cancel last week due to the storm BUT usually this meeting is held the second Tuesday of March each year.

I hope each of you had a great St. Patrick's day and you find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Take care,
Julie

Is it Maple Syrup Time Yet?

We haven't had a recipe for a while, and our warmer days brought this one to mind.

Baked French Toast

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 loaf French Bread
5 eggs
1 1/2 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla

Melt together the brown sugar, butter, and syrup. Pour into 9x13 greased pan. Slice French Bread into 3/4 inch slices and layer tightly into pan. Mix eggs, milk and vanilla, beating well. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Uncover, bake at 350° F for 30-40 minutes, until lightly browned. Invert onto large platter.

Serves 6 easily.

I think Spring is springing. I know that the water is pretty deep in the yard and where there isn't water there is mud. I've been wishing for this and hoping that we don't get anymore of the white stuff. I noticed that some of the willows along my road are getting close to pussy willow time.

Another sign of spring is that the swans have been sighted in the open water by Anchor Inn Bridge. Seems early to me but they must know what they are doing.I came by the Shogren Impoundment tonite and there is quite a bit of water on top of the ice.

Nice videos that were posted about St. Urho's parade. Maybe next year there will be more floats for this grand parade.

Don't forget The Sweetheart Dance is Saturday, March 21 at the Squaw Lake Community Center with music from The Pretenders and Friends, dance away from 7 to 11p. Cash bar. $6.00 to get in per person. A fun time for all ages.

The Chili Meal is Thursday, March 19 from 5 to 7p.at the Community Center.

Wow, Squaw Lake is really doing alot of things this month. It's been a long winter so this will help bring in the nice spring weather.

Take care all and enjoy the nice weather while it lasts.

Another Parade Video

Here's another video of the St. Urho's Day Parade. This one was taken from the "reviewing stand" area.

More squawking

The Perch Jerkers Contest had a good turn out. Well over 200 came out to fish. Only 2 perch were caught so one young man went home with a big smile on his face. Everyone said it was a beautiful day to be outside. Thanks to all who made this such a success.

The driveway was a little muddy when I went out this evening to change the sign at the Community Center. The water was quite deep by the sign. It was almost to the ankles, boy it sure is cold. Do you think spring is coming or will it hit us with some more nasty snow?

Don't forget to come out for the Chili Meal at the Community Center on March 19, serving from 5p to 7p. This is put on by St. Catherine Ladies and Centennial Lutheran Ladies and the proceeds go to Water for Life. Come have a great meal and good conversation with your friends and neighbors.

It sounds like a few people from over the Dora Lake Area are heading to the cities on Thursday to watch the Bigfork Girls Basketball Team play at state. Wishing the girls team the best.

Have a great week. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. Hard to believe that March is half over. Boy the time seems to fly as I get older.

Julie
Hi everyone,

It was such a great day yesterday. I accomplished a lot. I made soap and then got my tax papers together for the tax man. I was going to go up to the parade for a while but when I looked at the clock it was 6:30pm so I missed that one. Sorry I didn't post anything yesterday but I got busy and then it was 11PM and I went to bed.

I understand that the Perch Jerkers Contest had a good turn out. Over 200 paid attendees. That is a nice crowd. 2 perch were caught. This is better than last year. The question is where are all the perch? They had a nice depth of water out there from 10 to 20 feet. What has happened to all the perch. Any idea?

There is a nice video on our blog of the parade. Make sure you take a look. Would be nice if we could get another one that someone else had made.

The Bigfork Girls Basketball team won yesterday so they are headed for state. Go on to http://basketballinbigfork.blogspot.com to see what they have going on. We wish them the best in going to state.

Duck's Unlimited Banquet is April 25th. It starts at 5:30 at the Squaw Lake Community Center. Cost of Advance tickets are $25, with tickets bought at the door $35.00. Contact Danielle at The Hill where the tickets are available. Last year during the snow storm they had a record turnout. A night of fun for all who attend.

Max Township regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at 9AM followed by the Board of Appeals and Equalization at 10am. If you have questions about your real estate taxes in Max Township this is the meeting to attend. There will be representatives from Itasca County Assessor's office there.

I might be hit or miss on the blog next week. I'm taking a few days R&R so am not sure what my schedule will be. Maybe someone will step in and leave some comments.

St. Urho's Parade Video

There were at least 3 videographers recording the parade, but this is the first one up on Youtube.

Draft Trail Plan Ready for Comment

It's been 2 years in the making, but a draft of the proposed Bimose Trail (paved walking and biking trail from Eagleview to the store) is ready for public comment. Copies will be available for review at the Max Mini Store, Post Office, Community Center and Eagleview Community Technology Center by 1:00PM today. The trail alignment map is too large to put up at the store and PO so it will be available at the Community and Tech Centers only.

Property owners along the proposed trail route, and residents of Squaw Lake, will receive a self-mailing comment form from the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission. Please mail it back and let the trail planning committee know what you think-good or bad! If you did not receive a form and would like to comment you may e-mail Planner Kara Kent at kkent@ardc.org

Click here to read more about the plan. This page also has a link to the ms word version of the complete plan.

The draft plan and comments will be presented to the Squaw Lake City Council at their regular meeting on April 13th at 7:00PM.

The Squawk

I was starting to get worried. I could see people were looking at the blog but there were no comments, good, bad, or didn't care. I'm hoping that this can be a great place to exchange news of each of our own communities. Also, exchange greetings with people who don't live right in this area.

Thank you to all that made bars for the Perch Jerkers. We couldn't do all the things we do without the support of the community. The fire department appreciates all of you.

Sounds like it is going to be a great day tomorrow for the Contest. Come out and enjoy the fun, food, and catching up with friends you don't see very often. Free prizes for youth, Raffle prizes, great food. Have a wonderful time.

Operation Roundup applications need to be in by Monday, April 6th, by 4:30pm. These grants are made possible by the generosity of nearly 80% of the Members of North Itasca Electric Co-op. Application forms along with instructions can be obtained by calling the office at 218-743-3131 or 1-800-762-4048, by e-mail to kathej@nieci.com, online at www.NorthItascaElectric.com, by contacting your North Itasca Electric Co-op Director or by contacting one of the Trust Board Members.

Bullhead/fish fry is April 4th, serving from 4:30pm to 7 pm. Bullheads, Pollack, potatoes, baked beans, assorted salads, buns, bars, coffee and lemonade. Adults $8.00, Kids 5 -12 $4.00 Under 5 Free. Hope to see you there.

April 7, 5:30pm is the Economic Development Meeting. A representative from the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce will be there to explain the benefits of joining the Chamber. We will also be discussing the new brochure that will be coming out May of 2010. Please plan on attending.

Well, here is a little humor for you tonight.

SMALL TOWNS

Those who grew up in small towns will laugh when they read this.
Those who didn't will be in disbelief and won't understand how true it is.
  1. You can name everyone you graduated with.
  2. You know what 4_H means.
  3. You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. On Monday you could always tell who was at the party because of the scratches on their legs from running through the woods when the party was busted. (See #5)
  4. You used to "drag" Main..
  5. You scheduled parties around the schedules of different police officers, because you knew which ones would bust you and which ones wouldn't
  6. You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough, they'd tell your parents anyhow.) Besides, where would you get the money.
  7. You knew which section of the ditch you would find the beer your buyer dropped off.
  8. It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.
  9. The whole school went to the same party after graduation
  10. You didn't give directions by street names but rather by references..Turn by Nelson's house,go 2 blocks to Anderson's, and its four houses left of the track field.
  11. The golf course had only 9 holes.
  12. You couldn't help but date a friend's ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.
  13. Your car stayed filthy because of the dirt road, and you will never own a white vehicle for this reason.
  14. The town next to you was considered 'trashy' or 'snooty' but was actually just like your town.
  15. You referred to anyone with a house newer then 1955 as the 'rich' people.
  16. The people in the 'big city' dressed funny, and then you picked up the trend 2 years later.
  17. Anyone you wanted could be found at the local gas station or on Main Street.
  18. You saw at least one friend a week driving a tractor through town or one of your friends driving a grain truck to school occasionally.
  19. The gym teacher suggested you haul hay or pick rock for the summer to get stronger.
  20. Directions were given using THE stop light as a reference.
  21. When you decided to walk somewhere for exercise, 5 people would pull over and ask if you wanted a ride.
  22. Your teachers called you by your older siblings' names.
  23. Your teachers remembered when they taught your parents.
  24. You could charge at any local store or write checks without any ID.
  25. There was no McDonalds.
  26. The closest mall was over an hour away.
  27. It was normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawn mower.
  28. You've peed in a wheat field.
  29. Most people went by a nickname.
  30. You laughed your butt off reading this because you know it is true, and you forward it to everyone who may have lived in a small town.

I would not have wanted to be raised any other way!!!

Tough times don't last...Tough people do!!

Hope you have a great weekend,
Julie

Squaw Lake Squawk

Oh, the weather has been nasty hasn't it? I was so worried that the bus wouldn't start yesterday that I got up early and went and started my bus then I thought well I just as well start the spare bus. I left both running to warm up nice. I came in and fixed the wood stove and thought I better check for messages and then found out that school had been canceled. So I was out in the cold for nothing.

This morning I could tell it was still really cold (I don't own a thermometer because it makes me feel colder when I see the tempature) so went out to start the buses and neither one would run. So had to call and get someone to make the route for me. I don't know for sure what happened but something happened to the drop cord. Had electric at the plugin but none at the end of the drop cord. On the other bus the mechanic thought the cord to the block heater has something wrong with it. This is not the way to start a day.

Ok, enough of my grumbling. Isn't the sunshine beautiful? It really makes a person feel good to see it. Really perks up the spirit. Maybe spring will come.

I went to Duluth yesterday with my new granddaughter to be Michelle and her family and friends. She is going to make one beautiful bride. The bridesmaids picked out a nice dress in red. One big hurdle has been accomplished. I really figured it would take a couple of trips to find a bride dress and bridesmaid dresses.

Now, Gram here needs to find something to wear. They said no to jeans and a shirt. This will be the hardest outfit to find because I'm not much of a dress up person. Thankfully, I have 4 months. In that time I should be able to find something comfortable that will pass the muster on how it looks. This is kind of uncharted territory for me. I did wear a dress outfit 13 years ago when the daughter got married. That was pure luck to find that outfit.

Don't forget the Perch Jerker's Contest on Saturday. There will be lots of fun for all and the weather is suppose to be great. Hope to see you there supporting the Fire Department.

Have a great day.
Julie

Call For Entries

for the Art on the Edge 5th Annual Juried Art Show From the Edge Center for the Arts in Bigfork-
"Time to start planning to enter the Edge Center Gallery Juried Exhibit this year. The way juried exhibits work is that emerging and experienced artists choose the 1 to 3 pieces of their own work that they think are most successful. They photograph them, copy them to a CD, and send the CD with $15 and an entry form to The Edge Center Gallery in Bigfork. At that point the CD's are given to the juror who compares all the entries and chooses those that he or she thinks are the best and will create an interesting exhibit. The juror is looking for skillful composition, good craftsmanship, meaning, and creativity. The juror will be someone with wide experience in looking at art, who is from outside our area."

For more info check out The Edge web site. Deadline for entries is May 11, the "Art on the Edge" show will be July 2 through August 1, 2009 with the Artists Reception and Awards on Friday, July 3.

Squawking

WOW!! we've got a lot of snow already and it's only 8 pm. If it keeps this up we will think it is last April. When I was walking in from the bus run I thought we had about 8 inches then. I know the snow was going over the top of my sorrels. Maybe if it is going to dump on us in March we will have nice weather in April. I hope so as there is a lot of things that need to be cleaned up in this yard. If this part is posted twice I apologize as the computer gremlins are busy tonight and swallowed up what I was writing and I couldn't find it again.

I got word today that the Census Bureau is trying to recruit people who would be willing to help with the census in their local area. It says the pay is about $11/hour and 50cents/mile. There will be a test for this in Deer River on Friday (it takes about 1/2 hour and plan to be there for 1 1/2 hours). For more information on this contact Sue Waas at 218-999-7615.

So far this evening only Blackduck and Northome Schools are running 2 hours late tomorrow morning. Nothing showing for Deer River, Bug School or Dist. 318 at this time. It was very slow going tonight on the back roads up by Gratten. The drifts were already coming out into the road.

I've been working today on the Fire Departments Take A Kid Fishing Day which will be June 6, from 9am to noon. It is a great day for the kids. After they go fishing they come back to the landing for lunch. Some years it is hamburger, hotdogs, brats, chips and pop. Last year the Red Lake Fisheries donated walleye so the fish was fried up for the kids. If any of you would like to help with being a guide for this event please let me know. Also, I'm looking for donations of rod/reel combos. I am hoping that we can collect enough combos and/or money to buy these so that each child will leave with a rod/reel combo. Any donations for this can be dropped off at Mertes Garage or Country Hair Care. If you have a boat but don't want to guide we often have extra guys there with no boat if you'd want to loan out your boat.

Don't forget Saturday is the Perch Jerkers Contest starting at 11am and going til 2 pm. Stop out on the lake and have lunch even if you don't want to fish. It is a great time for all. Starting at 5pm is the great St. Urho's Parade starting at Mertes Garage and going to The Hill. Come to Squaw Lake and enjoy the day.

Coming up next week: Week of March 15 to March 22
  • Max Township rescheduled annual meeting on Tuesday night at 7pm at the Max Town Hall.
  • Chili Supper on Thursday, March 19, sponsored by St. Catherine and Centennial Lutheran Ladies with donations going to Water For Life.
  • Saturday, March 21st starting a 7pm is the Sweetheart Dance with music by The Pretenders and Friends. Fun time for all.

If you have the day off tomorrow enjoy it. Baking is always a great past time when a person is snowed in. Otherwise, a good book is also something to enjoy.

Take Care,

Julie

I hope everyone is at home safe and sound on this snowy night. Looks like we might get a few more inches before morning.

The Economic Development group has started working on a new brochure for the area. This will be bigger and better than the last one we put out. We could use help in this. On April 7 at 5:30pm there will be a representative from the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce at the Community Center to explain the benefits of us joining their Chamber. Hope to see you there.

The Max Township Annual Meeting scheduled for Tuesday night the 10th is rescheduled until Tuesday night the 17th due to the storm. Remember, this is your chance to tell the supervisors what you'd like to see done in your township.

It's late so will have to post more tomorrow. Hope everyone is safe during this storm

WOW Trip

We have just returned from the Women of the Woods "Mystery Trip" that Connie and I organized and rescheduled from 02-09-09 until today. We had 16 participants besides the 2 of us and we all had a good time. Our Mystery Destination was 20 businesses in Grand Rapids that are either: new, unusual, unique, or fun and some are a bit of all four. After the trip we gathered for lunch at a tea house that opened up especially for us today. They are usually closed on Mondays. We all met at Connie's at 8:30 this morning and got arranged into 3 car groups of 4 and 1 of 3 (the fourth in this car met us in Grand Rapids) We took everyone who had prearranged who to ride with and mixed them all up so everyone was riding with different people than they thought. Then we all met at Country Kitchen and they got their next instructions there. 16 took off while Connie and I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast. One person from each car called me between 1:20 and 1:30 to get the address for our final destination which was 1612 McKinney Lake Road. After a thoroughly enjoyable lunch we had photos taken and all left for home to beat the storm. We made it with about a half hour to spare before the snow started again.
Have a great rest of the day and stay between the ditches if you have to be out in this weather.

Squaw Lake Squawk

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I'm sure tomorrow we will all feel the effects of the time change when the alarm goes off. Usually I'm awake about 4 in the morning but I'm sure tomorrow when the radio kicks on I will want to throw it across the room.

I was reminded today by a friend that it is the time to get those wood duck houses cleaned out. While you are doing that you just as well do all the other bird houses you have around. Hopefully, when the ducks and geese come back this year they won't have to fight the snow like they did last year. I really felt sorry for the pair of geese on the field by my house last year when it snowed in April. All you could see was their heads and some neck sticking up out of the snow. I wished I could have given them some corn but there was no way that I could get across the field in the first place and then I would have had to shovel out a spot to dump the corn. They made it through ok.

I really don't buy too many magazines but one of my favorites has been Birds & Blooms. I was really surprised this month when I got the magazine and it has some advertisements in it. That was one of the reasons I liked the magazine was it didn't have any advertisements. So I found out that I could stay connected by going to purposedriven.com/join. Then if that wasn't what I needed I could help my sore achy back with a sleep number bed. Of course if that didn't work out and I was cranky and crabby in the morning I could have a cup of Gevalia coffee. To sooth myself after the coffee I could listen to the best one-piece music system by Bose. Then if I was still feeling stress or having pain in my joints I could do passive exercise with the Eserciser 2000 Elite. Of course if none of the above is to your liking you could take a trip and Discover Old World Europe, a fairy tale come true. But to be practical you could just visit the Country Store Catalog where you can buy things for your garden to raise bigger vegetables or light up your path or check out the weather. I think the editors missed something that people like me love to see, Birds and Blooms that's why we buy the magazine, we can get most of these other advertisements if we turn on the tv and they are just as annoying on the tv as in one of my favorite magazines.

Well, it looks like we might get some snow this week. Let's hope that the weather man is wrong or it goes someplace else. With all the melting that has been going on I am really looking forward to spring. With the snow melting I'm already seeing a lot of things that need to be cleaned up this spring.

May each and everyone who visit this blog have a wonderful week ahead. We would appreciate if you like the blog to drop us a line or let us know of something important going on in your area. Don't forget to check the calendar for what is coming up in Squaw Lake. This weekend coming up should be a lot of fun for a lot of people.

Don't forget that we are still looking for items to put on a Consignment Auction. Give one of us a call for more info: Diane - 659-2606, Connie - 659-4669 or Julie - 659-4239.

Take Care,
Julie

Great Night for Skiing by Candlelight

The trails were a little icy, but the weather was great last night for skiing and snowshoeing the trails at the Cutfoot Sioux Ranger Station. This is the first time the Forest Service scheduled the annual event for a Saturday afternoon and evening, and the parking lot was full at sundown. Skis and snowshoes are available to borrow every year but the 2010 date has not been set yet. Look for it here next year.

Squawk ramblings

Be very careful outside walking. I thought my yard was pretty well thawed out but found out the hard way last night that there is still some ice. It is hard to believe but I think my feet were higher than the rest of my body before my head came in contact with the ground followed by the rest of the body. The old adage it isn't the fall but the sudden stop at the end that hurts is certainly true. Figures had just went to the chriopractor on Wednesday now I'm sure everything is unaligned. Nothing broken so shouldn't gripe.

Happy Belated Birthday to Assistant Fire Chief Tom Kallio. Happy Birthday on Monday, March 9th to Art Mertes.

Have any birthdays or anniversary announcements let me know and I will put them on for you.

I saw a few snowmobilers out last night for that one last ride. I almost feel guilty about wishing the snow away as I know the businesses around here need the snowmobile business. But I am ready for no snow.

Looks like today will be a nice day, sun is shining and there is only a little wind. Have to get out and enjoy it while it last.

Don't forget to look at the calendar and see everything that is going on in the area this week. Gotta go and enjoy the sun.

St. Urho's Parade Video

Take a look at last year's parade, then start building that float!

Thursday, March 5, 2009

I think spring sprung a little today. This morning as I was doing my bus run it really looked like spring when I looked down the road and something was running down the road. At first I thought maybe it was a fisher or a mink but when I got closer it was a skunk. Well, I backed the bus off pretty fast so it wouldn't get sprayed. Finally, I was able to get around it without getting sprayed.

Don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday night. It is good ole day lights savings time again.

I just talked to my friend who lives in Montana and she said is was almost a blizzard there right now. It had been warm this morning and then this afternoon the wind changed to the north and it started snowing. I suppose this is what we have to look forward to in a few days. I was hoping that spring would just slide in and we wouldn't get anymore snow. I know the snowmobilers would like one more chance to go out on a ride.

We need donations of fishing things for Take a Kid Fishing Day, we could use hooks, bobbers, sinkers, any other type of fishing gear. We like to give the kids a bag of goodies to take home with them.

Looks like our nice weather will be leaving us next week. I looked on the 10 day forecast and by Wednesday it is going to be below zero. Looks like the high won't even be 10 above. One thing about Minnesota is if you don't like the weather just wait a day and it can be totally different.

Just a reminder. Next week is a busy week.

Squaw Lake City Council meeting is Monday at 7pm at the Community Center.

The nurse from Deer River will be at the Community Center on Tuesday morning.

Tuesday night is Annual Meetings at Townships.

Third River is starting theirs out a 6 with a potluck dinner followed by their meeting at 7:15.

Alvwood is having their meeting at 7.

Max is holding their meeting at 7.

Sand Lake's meeting will be at 5pm.

I still haven't found out when Goodhope is holding their meeting.

Then on Saturday March 14 at 11am is the start of the Squaw Lake Fire Department's Perch Jerkers Contest. This will run to 2 pm. Come out for some good family fun. Admission is $7 per person 12 and older. Under 12 get in free. Youth prizes for anyone under 12. Concessions.

The Hill will be holding their annual St. Urho's Parade and fun time starting with the parade from Mertes garage to The Hill. Come out and join the Mardi Gras spirit in Squaw Lake. Live music at The Hill.

On March 19th, the St. Catherine and Centennial Lutheran Ladies will be hosting a Chili Feed at the Community Center with proceeds going to Water For Life. Serving is 5pm to 7pm. Come out and have a nice meal and visit with friends and neighbors.

March 21st put on your dancing shoes and head to the Community Center, where The Pretenders and Friends will be playing some lovely dancing and listening music. There will be a cash bar available. Come out and support your fire department. Time for this event is 7pm to 11pm. If you are one of the hardy people you can still hit your favorite watering hole after the dance is over.

Take care,
Julie

To Join or not to Join

Should the Squaw Lake Economic Development Committee join the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce? Have you thought of a membership for your business? Come visit with Kerry Larsen, the Chamber membership coordinator, and let the committee know what you think. Meeting: April 7, 5:30, Community Center

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Well, today was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the snow was melting. Hope this keeps up. I'm sure Mother Nature will bring us back to reality soon. She always seems to have surprises in store for us.

On my bus run in the afternoons I've been seeing some wild life. Quite a few deer in the Dora Lake Area, they all look in nice shape. I've also been seeing quite a few grouse. They are out on the edges of the gravel roads basking in the sunshine.

March 8th is the open house for Derrick Greiger at The Hill starting a 5 o'clock. Take time to stop in and say hi and thank him for being in the Marines. We need to tell our service men and women how much we appreciate them.

We are still looking for guides/boats for kids for our annual Take A Kid Fishing Day which is June 6, 2008 starting at 9am and going to noon. Let me know if you are interested. Call Julie at 218-659-4239.

The Duck's Unlimited Banquet is coming up April 25th. As I find out more info on this I will add it to the blog. Last year I heard was a great time even tho it was in the middle of one of our heavy snowstorms.

I was in Grand Rapids today. After a couple trips across town to get the stuff I needed and dealing with the traffic I was sure glad to come back home. Everyone was in a big rush today, no one had time to let the other guy go first.

Have a great day tomorrow. Hopefully, we will have more sunshine and the snow will go down a little more. I kind of liked the mud on the roads this afternoon. It really made me think of Spring.

St. Urho

Before celebrations start for St. Patrick's Day, the Finnish descendents in many MN towns hold their own celebration in which they honor St. Urho, whose claim to fame was eradicating grasshoppers which devastated Finland's grape vineyards so the story goes...

Here too in this small northern community of Squaw Lake, with a population just 1 short of 100, the town will overnight become a booming metropolis as people frm hither and yon come "home" to help celebrate St. Urho's Day.

Round Lake, coated with ice 3 feet deep, is flooded with people heavily attired in snowsuits and warm boots, strolling about like penguins. Ice auger in tow, volunteers from Squaw Lake's Fire Department, continue to drill hole after hole in the ice to accommodate the many folks who have come to the Perch Jerkers Contest. Armed only with fishing poles and tackle boxes, fishermen one by one, park themselves and start jerking their minnow tipped lines for the elusive bite of the winning Perch and get to win the big prize from one of many contest categories.

Later in the afternoon, people begin to mingle between Mertes Garage and The Hill, while waiting for St. Urho's parade to begin. You don't want to be late for this gala event. What could be Squaw Lake's claim to fame, St. Urho's parade is under a tenth of a mile long and features quite an array of entries. We like to think we are similar to the famous New Orleans Mardi Gras, only downsized.

Inside The Hill, a local restaurant and lounge, judges are comparing notes, ready to bestow an award for the best tasting Kalamojakka Soup-off contest...in other words the best tasting Fish Chowder soup contest.

Now why would anyone want to miss coming to Squaw Lake, MN on March 14 of this year at 11am. Where else could you go fishing and the holes are drilled for you, participate in a scaled down version of the famous MN Mardi Gras, and to taste some of the best Kalamojakka chowder in the world? Come join in the fun and get to know us, we're just like family.

For more information on this family event, with lots of prizes, food, beverages, raffles and fish, call Brian Williams, 218-659-4216 or Julie Hemphill, 218-659-4239. This is an annual fundraiser for the Squaw Lake Fire Department.

Don't Like the Weather? Part II

In 1966, from March 1 to 4, 23 inches of snow fell in Aitkin; 37 inches in International Falls. Anyone remember this? We probably had about 30 inches.

The daily squawk

The weatherman is talking like we might have a few days that will begin to look and feel like spring and then maybe a little snow coming for the weekend. I know it is only the first week of March but I am really looking toward spring. Not the spring rain but the warm weather with the sun shining and the snow getting soft and starting to disappear.

Of course I have this long list of things that need to be done in my yard before August when my grandson Adam will marry his lovely fiance Michelle. After they help me with all these projects they might think it would have been easier to elope. However, Grandma is thinking free labor so lets do this and do that. I know I can't complete all these projects myself but with their help and anyone else I can con in to help I know everything will be perfect for the wedding. My daughter Stephanie and her husband Randy are in charge of the flowers. They know that I will get busy and forget to water so the flowers should be lovely because I will keep my fingers out of them.

We still haven't heard from too many on items for the consignment auction on May 16th. Don't wait til the last moment. We'd like to get things signed up and some pictures taken so that we can make up a nice auction bill. If you've tried calling Connie and she hasn't got back to you give Julie at 659-4239 a call as Connie had an emergency in her family. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts.

Do you have anything new going on you'd like to share with us. Drop us a comment or email Julie and she will put it on.

Only 11 days til the Perch Jerkers Contest on March 14th. Come out and enjoy the fun. Prizes for the youth under 12. Great food. A fun family day for all. Then at 5pm don't forget the St. Urho's parade from Mertes Garage to The Hill. The adults will enjoy a great evening with live music at The Hill.

On March 19th from 5pm - 7pm at the Squaw Lake Community Center the St. Catherine and Centennial Lutheran Ladies will put on their Community Supper of Chili with proceeds going to Water for Life. Come out for a great meal and visiting with friends and neighbors.

March 21st at the Squaw Lake Community Center is the Firemen's Sweetheart Dance with music by The Pretenders and Friends. Great dancing and listening music. Hours are 7pm - 11pm. Come out and have a great time. Admission is $6.00 per person

March is shaping up to be a busy month. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and will be nice so that everyone has a great time at all the functions.

Don't forget if you live in a township that most of the annual meetings are held on March 10th. Check with your township clerk or supervisors to see what time your meeting is at. This is the time when you can voice your opinion on how your township should be run.

Have a great day tomorrow. I hope the sun shines and makes life a little brighter for you.

Take care,
Julie

Winter Carnival Tater Tots Hotdish

From the St. Paul Pioneer Press

In 2008, Jerry Kane, Kane's Catering, St. Paul, served this crowd-pleaser at the St. Paul Winter Carnival's Hotdish Tents.

Makes 6 to 8 servings.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup diced yellow onion
1/2 cup diced green peppers
1/2 cup sliced button mushrooms
1 tablespoon McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning
1 pinch dried thyme leaves (or fresh, if available)
1 pinch ground black pepper
1 pinch granulated garlic or garlic powder
1 pound ground beef
1 can (family-size) Campbell's Mushroom Soup
1/2-1 pint heavy whipping cream (depends on how wet/dry you want the dish)
1 bag (2 pounds) Ore-Ida Tater Tots
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

To assemble meat mixture: In large saucepan, heat oil. Add onion, peppers, mushrooms, steak seasoning, thyme, pepper and garlic. Sweat vegetables over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Add ground beef. Heat until beef is thoroughly cooked. Remove from heat. Drain any excess liquid. Add mushroom soup. Return to heat. Add cream. Cook, stirring often, over medium heat for 5 minutes. Pour into 9-by-13-inch baking dish.

To crisp Tater Tots: Meanwhile, preheat oven to 425 degrees. Spread Tater Tots on cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until crispy. (Note: Crisping is optional, but it helps Tater Tots retain their shape when combined in hotdish.) Add Tater Tots and cheese to meat mixture. (Or layer Tater Tots and cheese over meat mixture.)

To bake hotdish: Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees. Bake, uncovered, for 45 minutes or until internal temperature is 165 degrees.

Squaw Lake Squawk

Boy, it was cold this morning or so it seemed to me, but the sun came out and then the rest of the day didn't seem so bad. I actually thought this afternoon seemed to be leaning toward spring.

The nurse from Deer River will be here on March 10 to take blood pressure and do toe nails. You have to call Deer River Healthcare to set up an appointment for the nails. I'm sorry I forgot to get the phone number for you tonight when I was at the hall.

The Squaw Lake City Council Meeting is March 9 at 7pm at the Community Center.

There are alot of eagles back already. I've seen quite a few on my bus runs in the afternoon especially if there is a road kill deer. My they are a beautiful bird.

Just a reminder that the Perch Jerkers Contest is March 14 from 11am to 2 pm. Come on out and have fun and support the Squaw Lake Fire Department.

The St. Catherine Ladies and the Centennial Lutheran Ladies will be sponsering a chili supper on March 19, from 5pm to 7pm with proceeds going to Water for Life. Come and have a great supper and join others in the community for a good chat.

Got any news either post a comment or you can email me at jhemphil@paulbunyan.net

Have a great day tomorrow.

Ramblings and reminders

Just a reminder that March 14 is the Annual Perch Jerker's Contest from 11am - 2pm. Lots of fun and prizes, great food also. Proceeds go to the Squaw Lake Fire Department. Admission is $7.00 for anyone over 12. Under 12 get in free. Come and fish or if you'd like to volunteer to help the department with this fund raiser give Julie a call at 218-659-4239.

Starting at 5pm is the Great St. Urho's Day parade. The parade starts at Mertes Garage and goes to The Hill. Get some friends and do a float and join the fun or just join the fun. There will be first and second prizes. Also, there will be a fish soup cookoff (couldn't remember how to spell it), give Danielle at The Hill a call by Thursday, March 12 to enter and get the rules.

Well, I was surprised this morning when someone mentioned to me that daylight savings times begins in one week. Yup, that's right we need to spring ahead next Saturday night 1 hour before going to bed so that you can wake up at the right time. So, March 8 is the beginning of the daylight savings. Make sure you change your clock then.

Got a call this morning to go out to breakfast and was shocked when I stepped outside. My it was cold out but since I don't own a thermometer I didn't know how cold. When I got home I heard it was -19 in Squaw Lake and -27 over at Dora Lake. No wonder I shivered all the way to breakfast.

Looks like we are going to have some warm weather this week. I saw on the long range forecast that by Wednesday we are suppose to be in the mid 30's for the day time high and down in the teens for lows at night. Is this a teaser or is it getting closer to spring? I'm hoping it is getting closer to spring as the wood pile is getting mighty low.

I'm thinking that spring must be getting close because yesterday I had this urge to clean a closet. Now it isn't often I get the urge to clean so it must be the extra sunshine we are getting.

I had an email from a cousin who lives close to Seattle and they have mowed their grass once already and they have baby ducks and geese. Not sure I want the lawn mowing but the rest sounds good.

Have a great day.
Julie

Forest Service Announces Seasonal Road Closure for OHVs

All roads open to Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) will be temporarily closed to OHV use from March 15 until May to prevent damage to roads during the spring break-up period.
The Chippewa National Forest OHV Travel Management decision was issued in November 2007 and went into effect May 2008 with the printing of the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) displaying roads available for OHV riding. Effective March 2009, the seasonal road closures will take effect. The temporary closure to OHV use was initiated in response to resource protection concerns expressed by the public, and in consistency with the spring break-up period when roads are also closed to heavy vehicle traffic. The temporary closure does not affect snowmobiles. Cross country travel by motorized vehicles continues to be prohibited by National Forest Service policy. Click here to go to the official forest web site.
